Mobility And Social Media: 2012 Tech Trends Signal Major Changes For Businesses

January 25th, 2012 No comments

If you’re not familiar with iPads and Facebook, 2012 may be the year you join the crowd. In my Tech Trends column in this month’s McHenry County Business Journal (digital edition here) I talk about how this may be the year everything changes:

Mobility, social media, and cloud computing are taking the world by storm. Consumer IT is affecting everyone from enterprise-level organizations to small businesses, and back to the consumers themselves. It’s a rapid and sometimes vicious cycle in which failure to follow the trend could cost companies much-needed momentum.

Here are five ways you can stay on top of these emerging trends.

1. Make a mission statement
Everyone should have a mission statement for online marketing, businesses and individuals alike. What are you trying to accomplish? Do you want people to buy products, sign up for your email newsletter, visit your blog? Explain how you are uniquely qualified to help. If you’re marketing yourself rather than a business, your mission is to demonstrate to employers how you are uniquely qualified.

2. Contribute value
You get out of social media what you put into it. Follow people with valuable content and contribute valuable content of your own. Note that the converse is also true: you can and should stop following people if they do not provide you with information you find useful.

3. Seek balance
If you’re not posting often enough, people will lose interest. If you post too often they’ll be overwhelmed. Find the right frequency for you based on your mission and target audience. This is where mobility and social media go hand in hand. If you think of a good LinkedIn status, use your smartphone and post it. It takes far less time to actually do it than to write “Update LinkedIn Status” on a to-do list.

4. Delve in
Don’t be afraid to experiment! Sign up for Facebook, add some apps to your iPad, and most of all read, read, read about these emerging technologies.

5. Subscribe to Tech Tips by email, RSS, and Twitter
And here’s a good place to start. Follow Tech Tips and get your feet wet with someone who isn’t going to laugh if you make mistakes. Email subscribers receive bonus tips and product reviews. Be sure to follow me @trionaguidry on Twitter for breaking tech news and other geek goodies. If you’re not on Twitter you can visit my blog where you’ll find my Twitter feed in the right sidebar. Don’t know how to RSS? Check out my info on RSS here.

How are you planning to use mobility and social media in the new year? Comment and share your thoughts!

How To Find The Right Web Designer

November 15th, 2010 No comments

web designWhat do you do if your business needs a new web site, or you need help changing the old one? How do you find a web designer who understands your needs?

A top-quality web designer will discuss your goals with you, and develop a site that is professional, clean, and easy to navigate. Ask for references and examples of previous work. Once you have chosen your designer, don’t hesitate to ask questions. You may have your heart set on a particular design, but keep your options open. Your web designer may have suggestions that will increase your site’s appeal and marketability. He or she may also have advice about content that will increase your traffic and search engine rankings.

If you’re interested in changing an existing site, ask your designer what information he or she needs. Text changes are relatively simple, while changes to graphics can be more complex. If your site looks outdated, it may be better to create a new one than modify the existing one. Your web designer can help you evaluate.

Be wary of web “designers” who have no references or experience, or who try to upsell you on services like search engine optimization. While SEO is important, unscrupulous people may try to talk you into expensive and unnecessary options. Know what you’re getting and how much it will cost. When in doubt, ask for clarification. A good web designer will keep you informed of your costs and let you know if the price is going beyond the original estimate.

Some Web designers can help you integrate your blog with your web site, or teach you how to use LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter for marketing. You can also ask about followup services such as making site changes or learning how to change the site yourself.

Web 2.0 For Job Search

September 15th, 2009 No comments

help wantedFinding a job can be difficult. Fortunately the Internet offers excellent tools to help you in your job search or career transition.

It’s important to think of the Internet as one of many tools in your job search arsenal. To that end, you’ll want to think of yourself as a brand, like Coca-Cola or CNN. What are your strengths? What are your skills? What sets you apart from other applicants? Write your mission statement on an index card (“I am a computer expert specializing in tech support, web design and training”) and tape it to the top of your monitor. This will help you stay focused as you visit various job sites.

Next, decide which technologies you want to incorporate into your search. Web 2.0 refers to collaborative web sites, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed if you try to be on LinkedIn, Twitter, MySpace, and FaceBook all at once. Some people choose to forgo a web site in favor of a blog, for example, or elect to participate in only one or two social networking sites.

Speaking of networking, it’s hard to succeed by computer alone. Meeting people face-to-face remains the best way to find employment. Create a business card for yourself with links to your online profiles. When you meet people, get their cards and send a follow-up email asking them to network with you online. And be sure to put your newly-honed Web 2.0 skills on your resume!

If you’re interested, I’ll be teaching a class on Web 2.0 For Job Search for the Cary (Illinois) Park District on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 from 9:30am-11:30am and again from 6pm-8pm. You can find registration details on my web site. I hope to see you there!

Don’t forget to subscribe to Tech Tips for the latest computer news. Next month, just in time for Hallowe’en, I’ll frighten you with Bride Of The Computer Zombies. If you have any computer questions, let me know.

Search Engine Optimization

June 15th, 2009 No comments

Search engine optimization is the fine art of getting your web site or blog ranked highly on Internet search engines and directories. Keywords are your key to improving your online marketing.

What is the purpose of your web site or blog? Is it to advertise your business? Attract customers? Provide an online presence for your company? Make a list of what you are trying to accomplish, then another of the words people might use to find you. It’s important to think like your customers and avoid jargon. When I write about computers I do my best to keep the technobabble to a minimum. People won’t be searching for “restarting a Windows XP workstation,” they’ll look for “computer help”.

Keywords can be inserted into the code of your web site, where search engines will notice them. You should also include a brief description of your site’s purpose, or what I like to describe as your mission statement. Think of it as the electronic version of your 30-second elevator speech. This is what’s displayed when people see your site on Google or Yahoo. By using keywords common to your business, your rankings will improve.

The real secret to reaching number one on search engines is, of course, money. Google, Yahoo and other search engines have paid programs you can use to boost your ratings. As with any marketing, you have to watch your dollars wisely. You might want to experiment with paid rankings but be sure to compare effectiveness to cost.

Next month I’ll teach you about Troubleshooting Wireless Networks. Don’t forget to subscribe to Tech Tips for bonus tips and tricks plus the latest computer news.

Blogs For Business

June 15th, 2009 No comments

How can blogs help you market your business? Every day I meet people who are finding innovative ways to get the most out of blogs, or regularly updated web sites that integrate articles and reader commentary.

Blogs can help you reach new customers while staying in touch with old ones. They say you have to contact someone seven times before he or she remembers you. Blogs make it easy to keep people informed about news and trends in your industry. My Tech Tips blog is an example of a small business blog. It helps me maintain a rapport with existing and potential customers by providing value-added information. You can also improve your customer service and cut down on staff time by using your blog to answer your company’s Frequently Asked Questions.

Your business blog is part of your online brand. When you think of Coca-Cola or Nike, those names instantly bring to mind familiar products. You want your customers to associate your name with good feelings about the products and services you sell. Remember, to get you have to give. By providing free and pertinent information, you’ll establish yourself as a leader in your field.

Marketing your blog isn’t as hard as you think. Send an announcement to your customers, put links in your email signature, and be sure to mention it when networking. This month’s Tech Tip will tell you how to optimize your web site or blog to be more findable on Internet search engines.

In July you’ll get a special preview of the new operating systems, Windows 7 And Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Don’t forget to subscribe to Tech Tips for bonus tips and tricks plus the latest computer news.
